30 Low Impact Tips for #lowimpact30 in May

This May, blogger Sustainably Vegan is running a #lowimpact30 challenge to celebrate the Low Impact Movement. Immy provides a free ebook you can download with a summary of low impact living, with the goal to decrease your environmental footprint.

Through zero waste swaps, consuming less and eating plantbased diets, we can drastically reduce our impact on the world to a small fraction of the impact we used to have.

Below are a quick thirty tips for you to take a scroll through, find something you haven't tried yet, and have a go at lowering your impact this May. It's a great time to get involved in the online community.

  1. Quit plastic shopping bags, permanently
    You can read about alternatives here
  2. Quit single-use coffee cups, permanently
    If you need takeaway you can re-use a jar you have at home or purchase a reusable coffee cup
  3. Practice saying "no straw please" when you order
    If you need a straw you can carry your own glass, paper, silicone, bamboo or stainless steel option, or even keep a stash of your own plastic if it's for medical reasons while continuing to discourage non-essential plastic waste
  4. Enjoy a sit-down meal
    Save the disposable packaging by asking for real cups, plates and cutlery to eat where you order food
  5. Ask to take a doggybag home
    Save edible food from going to landfill by finishing food you've already paid for
  6. Carry your own water from home
    A refillable water bottle is healthier and cheaper
  7. Create your own zero waste kit
    Before you buy anything new, go around your kitchen and find what reusable water bottles, cutlery, napkins and tupperware you already have to avoid single-use packaging when eating out
  8. Sort your recycling correctly
    Know your council region's rules, put all cardboard, metal, glass and some plastics in your recycling, and keep everything else out
  9. Save your soft plastics and electronics
    Save your items that can't go in the curbside recycling bin for specialised recycling services like Redcycle for soft plastics and your local dump or drop-off point for e-waste
  10. Practice a capsule wardrobe
    To get the most out of your wardrobe and avoid textile waste, practice a capsule wardrobe to reinvent the same items of clothing in different combinations
  11. Buy organic fabric basics
    When you need to shop, opt for organic materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo and tencel
  12. Thrift what you can
    Head to your local op shops for a browse of the types of clothing, homewares and other items they have and make a note for the next time you need something
  13. Try a no spend challenge
    Set yourself a length of time where you won't buy anything new beside absolute essentials (like groceries) and see if you can scale back your consumerism
  14. DIY a beauty product
    Can you make something yourself using basic pantry items? Biome has recipes you could try
  15. Choose recyclable packaging beauty products
    For what you can't DIY, try options packaged in cardboard, glass, stainless steel (or nothing at all) like Dirty Hippie Cosmetics
  16. Switch to a bamboo toothbrush
    Such an easy, affordable swap that even dentists prefer (just make sure you choose soft bristles)
  17. Buy cardboard packaged cleaning products
    Laundry powder, dishwasher powder and DIY items like bicarb can all be found in cardboard
  18. Choose plastic-free TP
    From the supermarket or an online delivery service, Pure Planet or Who Gives A Crap
  19. Download the palm oil app
    Use it to boycott palm oil in everything you buy: palmoilinvestigations.org/poi-scanner-app.html
  20. Shop unpackaged or recyclable packaging groceries
    Even without bulk stores, you can make small choices between things like plastic-packaged or cardboard packaged pasta
  21. Quit seafood, permanently
    The United Nations predicts ocean fish will be extinct within thirty years, so there are no fishing practices that are considered sustainable anymore
  22. Quit red meat and dairy, permanently
    The United Nations has urged the entire world to move away from animal agriculture to prevent global collapse since cattle livestock is considered the largest contributor to human-led climate change (everyone know this means beef but commonly forget that dairy is included in this, too)
  23. Eat a diet that's mostly produce
    By building your diet on fresh produce you incidentally avoid animal products, packaging, and additives like palm oil
  24. Eat locally and seasonally
    Consider what grows naturally in your area and see if you can plan your diet around local foods that are currently in season to cutdown on resources needed to import your food
  25. Cook smaller quantities
    To tackle food waste, consider buying and cooking less to avoid throwing out uneaten leftovers
  26. Store your leftovers well without plastic
    To tackle food waste, take the time to research the best ways to extend longevity of your vegetables and invest in glass or steel food storage products
  27. DIY your own food
    Can you make some of your favourite packaged items at home like tomato sauce, tortillas and cheeses?
  28. Try composting
    Small kitchen bench composts can be accessible to even inner-city apartment dwellers if you can find somewhere to dispose of the contents (anything from an empty ice cream tub to collect scraps or a fully contained compost bin)
  29. Repurpose packaging
    Save gift wrapping for re-using on future gifts, parcel packaging for re-use on future parcels you have to send, and food packaging to store food leftovers
  30. Support local makers
    Just like eating locally, it's great to try and buy products made as locally as possible, and look for that Made in Australia tag to avoid the air miles of any item you buy
