A budget vegan in NYC

So you scrimped, saved and sacrificed and you're finally landing in JFK airport. What now? A girl's gotta eat! Sticking to easy budget restaurants 90% of the time and saving your pennies for a few special treats that are genuinely worth the money is the most budget effective strategy.

Here are my tips:

  • Midtown falafel karts (w/o yoghurt) $6
All around Times Square and Midtown at night you'll find pop up carts, mainly featuring red meat and fried junk. However many also have falafels, so just let them know you're dairy free and enjoy an easy, cheap and satisfying dinner on the go.
  • Pret-a-Manger nori and quinoa wrap $6.50
Located all over the city this is an easy fix with a serious nutritional punch!
  • Pret a Manger dried fruit and nut snacks $2
Not the best value for money but still scoring high on affordability, great when you're really in a pickle and came unprepared!
  • Chipotle burritos or burrito bowls $7-9
Located all over the country, almost as abundant as Starbucks. For a seriously healthy and filling black bean or pinto bean burrito head here and design your own meal.
  • Subway veggie patty $6.75
Subway is fraught with suspicion and rumours, but I had them bring the box out the front and the veggie patties are vegan. Available all over the place and you get to design your own.
  • $1 Fritos from side of the road stands
Grab a Snapple while you're there!
  • Two Boots pizza $4 per slice {pictured above}
In Williamsburg across the road from the subway stop is this pizza joint with two types of vegan cheese pizza. That's $10 for 2 slices and a Rootbeer!
  • Panda Express rice & veggie bowl $5
Available all over the place - mainly in universities, JFK airport and other food courts.

Treats to save your $$ for:

  • Champs Diner
An all vegan traditional American diner with a hipster twist located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It's not a budget restaurant but it's absolutely worth it.
  • Dun-Well Doughnuts
Vegan donuts two streets away from Champs Diner.
  • Cinnamon Snail @ The Pennsy
All vegan impressive sandwiches and baked goods in the Pennsy attached to Madison Square Garden.

If you've been to New York, what were your favourite vegan eats?
